RESUMO

Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) has played a huge role in the interventional treatment of organ bleeding and accidental bleeding. Choosing bio-embolization materials with good biocompatibility is an important part of TAE. In this work, we prepared a calcium alginate embolic microsphere using high-voltage electrostatic droplet technology. The microsphere simultaneously encapsulated silver sulfide quantum dots (Ag2S QDs) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), and fixed thrombin on its surface. Thrombin can achieve an embolic effect while stopping bleeding. The embolic microsphere has good near-infrared two-zone (NIR-II) imaging and X-ray imaging effects, and the luminous effect of NIR-II is better than that of X-rays. This breaks the limitations of traditional embolic microspheres that only have X-ray imaging. And the microspheres have good biocompatibility and blood compatibility. Preliminary application results show that the microspheres can achieve a good embolization effect in the ear arteries of New Zealand white rabbits, and can be used as an effective material for arterial embolization and hemostasis. This work realizes the clinical embolization application of NIR-II combined with X-ray multimodal imaging technology in biomedical imaging, achieving complementary advantages and excellent results, more suitable for studying biological changes and clinical applications.

RESUMO

This study was designed to investigate the insecticidal activity of the essential oils (EOs) and extracts from Rhododendron rufum and Rhododendron przewalskii. The EOs were extracted from the leaves of R. Rufum and R. przewalskii by hydro-distillation and their chemical components were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The repellency, contact toxicity and antifeedant activity of the EOs and extracts were evaluated against Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castaneum along with those of their main components. A total of nine compounds were identified from the EO of R. Rufum, and the most abundant component was myristicin (79.72%). The EO of R. Rufum exhibited repellent activities at different levels and its main compound myristicin showed contact toxicity and repellent effects against S. oryzae and T. castaneum. Meanwhile, by bioassay-guided fractionation, four compounds with strong antifeedant activities against T. castaneum, 24-methylenecycloartanyl-2'E, 4'Z-tetradecadienoate (1), methyl thyrsiflorin B acetate (2), friedelin (3) and Excoecarin R1 methyl ester (4) were separated and identified from the ethanol extract of R. przewalskii for the first time. Considering the significant anti-insect activities, the EOs and extracts of R. Rufum and R. przewalskii might be used in integrated pest strategies, establishing a good perspective for the comprehensive use of natural plant resources of Rhododendron genus.

RESUMO

Tumor recurrence is one of the most important risk factors that can negatively affect the survival rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. However, the key regulators dictating this process and their exact mechanisms are understudied. This study aimed to construct a gene co-expression network to predict the hub genes affecting CRC recurrence and to inspect the regulatory network of hub genes and transcription factors (TFs). A total of 177 cases from the GSE17536 dataset were analyzed via weighted gene co-expression network analysis to explore the modules related to CRC recurrence. Functional annotation of the key module genes was assessed through Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses. The protein and protein interaction network was then built to screen hub genes. Samples from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were further used to validate the hub genes. Construction of a TFs-miRNAs-hub genes network was also conducted using StarBase and Cytoscape approaches. After identification and validation, a total of five genes (TIMP1, SPARCL1, MYL9, TPM2, and CNN1) were selected as hub genes. A regulatory network of TFs-miRNAs-targets with 29 TFs, 58 miRNAs, and five hub genes was instituted, including model GATA6-MIR106A-CNN1, SP4-MIR424-TPM2, SP4-MIR326-MYL9, ETS1-MIR22-TIMP1, and ETS1-MIR22-SPARCL1. In conclusion, the identification of these hub genes and the prediction of the Regulatory relationship of TFs-miRNAs-hub genes may provide a novel insight for understanding the underlying mechanism for CRC recurrence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Early identification and diagnosis of tumors are of great significance to improve the survival rate of patients. Amongst other techniques, contrast-enhanced ultrasound is an important means to help doctors diagnose tumors. Due to the advantages of high efficiency, accuracy and objectivity, more and more computer-aided methods are used in medical diagnosis. Here we propose, a color-coded diagram based on quantitative blood perfusion parameters for contrast-enhanced ultrasound video. The method realizes the static description of the dynamic blood perfusion process in contrast-enhanced ultrasound videos and reveal the blood perfusion characteristics of all regions of the tissue providing assistance to the doctors in their clinical diagnosis. METHODS: For effective illustration of the blood perfusion through tissues, we propose (a) an improved block matching algorithm to eliminate the image distortions caused by breathing; (b) compute the time-grayscale intensity curve for each pixel to obtain four different quantitative blood perfusion parameters; and finally (c) employ the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm to cluster the blood perfusion parameters, where each parameter is associated with a particular color. Thus based on the correspondence between the pixel and the blood perfusion parameters, all the pixels are color-coded to obtain the color-coded diagram. RESULTS: To the best of our knowledge, the proposed technique is one-of-its-kind to color code the contrast-enhanced ultrasound videos using blood perfusion parameters in order to understand the hemodynamic characteristics of the benign and malignant lesion. In our experiments, various contrast-enhanced ultrasound videos corresponding to several real-world cases were color-coded and the results of the experiments illustrated that the proposed color-coded diagrams are consistent with the diagnosis presented by the physicians. CONCLUSIONS: The experimental results suggested that the proposed method can comprehensively describe the blood perfusion characteristics of tissues during the angiography process thereby effectively assisting the doctors in diagnosis.

RESUMO

Temperature distribution is a critical indicator of the health condition for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage tanks. In this paper, we present a large-scale wireless temperature monitoring system to evaluate the safety of LPG storage tanks. The system includes wireless sensors networks, high temperature fiber-optic sensors, and monitoring software. Finally, a case study on real-world LPG storage tanks proves the feasibility of the system. The unique features of wireless transmission, automatic data acquisition and management, local and remote access make the developed system a good alternative for temperature monitoring of LPG storage tanks in practical applications.
